Our History

Create. Provoke. Engage

MCC Theater is a leading off-Broadway theater company with a reputation for developing and producing bold NEW WORKS, engaging AUDIENCES, and empowering ARTISTS. Guided by the vision of founding Co-Artistic Directors BOB LuPONE and BERNIE TELSEY, and Co-Artistic Director WILL CANTLER, MCC is driven to provoke conversations that have never happened – and otherwise never would.

Since our founding in 1986 as the MANHATTAN CLASS COMPANY. Our programming has grown from humble workshops to now include the development and production of NEW PLAYS and MUSICALS; education and training programs that transform the lives of more than 1200 NYC students every year; a season of lively and PROVOCATIVE readings, conversations, and panels; and more recently, the opening of our very own state-of-the-art theater complex, THE ROBERT W. WILSON MCC THEATER SPACE.

MCC empowers ARTISTS and STUDENTS to take risks and create bold, daring work that inspire audiences to reflect upon and discuss the most essential, but often overlooked, questions of our time.

“MCC was born out of an impulse by a group of artists to challenge and learn from one another. The tenets of COLLABORATION and COMMUNITY were central to our work then and remain the heart of everything we do today.”

-Will Cantler, Co-Artistic Director

“We are humbled by the ARTISTS, STUDENTS and AUDIENCES who have helped evolve into the theater we are today and we invite them all to our new home in Hell’s Kitchen in which our community can continue to grow together and learn from one another.”

Bob LuPone, Co-Artistic Director

“Theater should not be passive. It’s a dynamic art form. Our goal is to inspire real engagement with the work. The energy of an MCC play continues well beyond the curtain call.”

-Bernie Telsey, Co-Artistic Director
